Easy to Exist

On an episode of Queer Eye: Season 6, Episode 5, there is a man, Todd, or as they called him “Craw-Zaddy” who was talking about his life after the loss of his beloved wife, who died unexpectedly many years ago. He said it was “too easy to exist and too hard to live.” I googled that shit and I think that boy came up with it himself.

Can you sit with that quote a minute and not be gobsmacked?

Isn’t this the bane of our entire existence? Our entire struggle as humans? I may be stretching it too far, but so much emotional suffering that I see is held in that sentence. People are trapped in existing. Living is exhausting, raw, and so damn scary. It’s also insanely rewarding, but few of us trust that it can be for us enough to stop the ease of existing. We each think that the magic of living won’t cover us, we’ll be the unfortunate ones that don’t get to feel alive. So why risk it? We become shells, robots, cogs, hollow. The world can put these cogs to use, so there is no external motivation for us to free ourselves.

Oh man. I got to sit with it longer. Too easy to exist, and too hard to live.
